    Amanda Tuite

    Born and raised in Texas, Amanda previously served as a Communication Access Specialist II in the Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (ODHHS), under the Texas Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Amanda attended the University of North Texas and has years of experience as an advocate on behalf of Deaf and Hard of Hearing consumers who were denied access to communication. She has given workshops on various topics such as Deaf Self Advocacy Training (DSAT), Disclosing your Disability, Law Enforcement Training, Soft Skills, and Cultural Competency.  Amanda also provides nation-wide advocacy training to teach people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing about their disability rights.  In addition to her work for the state, she has been active in several professional organizations, including Deaf Women United and Miss Deaf Texas organization.

    Breana Cross-Caldwell holds her CI/CT from RID, B.S. in Interpretation from Western Oregon University and is a Certified Life Coach. She has led thousands of interpreters in preventing burnout and finding the passion again in their lives and work through developing habits of self-care.   • The 50 Year Gap: Racial Disparities in Interpreting Programs and the Pathway Forward

    One avenue in which aspiring interpreters take towards acquiring ASL and English proficiency is attending an Interpreter Training Program (ITP). A student's overall perspective of their ITP experience is determined by the nature of their exchanges with faculty and peers, and their academic interactions within the classroom. This workshop discusses recent data on racial disparities in ITP faculty, student body and classroom materials. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss ways in which their individual and collective power can create lasting impact on the push toward racial and cultural inclusion in interpreter education.

  • Consumer Orientation: A Foundation for Clear and Inclusive Communication
