Law Enforcement Interpreting for Deaf Persons: An Independent Study Package

Law enforcement interviews serve as legitimate forms of criminal investigation when interpreted accurately. Confessed information is valuable in many cases as long as it is reliable. The reliability of the confessed information should not be compromised by inadequate interpretation. It is vital that interpreters working in law enforcement settings be trained and educated in order to provide accurate and impartial interpretations that do not violate the rights of Deaf people or compromise the case built by law enforcement officers. This study guide is designed to help you gain depth and understanding of the laws, protocol, and best practices related to interpreting when law enforcement officers are involved.

This study guide is a companion to the manual, Law Enforcement Interpreting for Deaf Persons by Tara Potterveld. By using this study guide with the manual, both hearing and Deaf interpreters can earn up to 8.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in the area of professional/legal studies.

This study guide is designed to be used by hearing and Deaf individuals or small study groups working with RID approved sponsors, or in classrooms as part of an overall curriculum.
